    Conservatives clean up

20/04/2010

Robin Walker got out the gardening gloves and the litter picker to join local volunteers in a litter pick along the footpath and the meadow between Newtown Road and Medway Road today. He was joined by local County Councillor Lucy Hodgson and City Council Candidate Tariq Hussain as well as the Council Cabinet Member responsible for Cleaner and Greener, Roger Knight.

Conservatives had identified the area as in need of attention during a canvass in the area and, instead of calling on the city council's hardworking litter hit squad, decided to roll their sleeves up and sort out the problem themselves. They were congratulated by local businesses and passers by for taking action to deal with the problem.

The Conservative City council in Worcester has increased the rate of recycling and won awards for its cleaning of the city. Nationally the party wants to deal with problems of fly-tipping, encourage more community action and have policies to engage young people and the unemployed with good works.

Robin said

"Community action is not hard to do. It is fun, useful and makes each community a better place. That is why the Conservative Party is championing volunteers and community groups. We are passionate about keeping our city a good place to be and that means keeping it clean and enjoying our green spaces. People like Lucy Hodgson and Tariq Hussain who live nearby and get involved in all sorts of community work are only too happy to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in, I want to make sure they have the support of Government."

"We also want to introduce schemes to get young people involved in litter picking through the national citizen service and make sure that the long term unemployed are engaged in work that will benefit their communities. Having a cleaner, greener city in which more people get involved in community activity is not just an aspiration, it is something that Conservative councillors have already been delivering for Worcester. I will support them in that work and I will work with councillors of any party who share this aspiration."
