Robin Walker, Parliamentary Candidate for Worcester will today celebrate St George's Day, the 23rd April and call for a better deal for the English Counties.
Robin wants to see a higher proportion of English MPs in the House of Commons as part of plans to reduce the overall number of MPs and the cost of Parliament.
He also supports a new funding formula to replace the current system which unfairly penalises counties such as Worcestershire and favours the big urban conurbations.
Robin has been campaigning for strong local government and to defend Worcester's city council from Labour plans to abolish district councils and give more power to unelected regional assemblies.
The racist British National Party chose to launch their manifesto today and Robin has urged voters in Worcester not to support them even as a protest vote.
Robin said
"I am proud to be English and proud to be British. Worcestershire is at the heart of England and I am excited that this evening I will be attending the Mayor's Charity Dinner in a quintessentially English Guildhall, one that is still at the heart of our local democracy."
"It is crazy to me that the current boundary system means that we could see my party win the election comfortably in England but still not form a government for the country, especially after Scotland and Wales have been given their own devolved Parliaments. Rather than creating artificial regional assemblies, or furthering the break up of the union by creating an English Parliament, I support giving English MPs a fair share of the seats in the UK Parliament. Instead of stripping them away, I support retaining our historical councils and making them more efficient. In this glorious sunshine, during an election that could bring a change for the better to our country, England is a wonderful place to be."
"People in Worcester have a lot of choices at this election but I think the most important one is to go for change - change for the better, not change for the worse. It is sad to me that a party with an alien ideology, dead set against this country's excellent record for fair play, respect and toleration, should be trying to hi-jack this day and I know that the vast majority of people in Worcester will see through any façade of respectability and remember that the BNP stand only for change for the worse. I hope all the members of every party in Worcester will celebrate today and then get back to the work of campaigning for positive change." |
