On the same day that Gordon Brown called for an anti-Tory alliance of Labour and the Liberal Democrats, Robin Walker's nomination papers to be a Parliamentary Candidate were published, showing that former Labour Councillor, Pamela Clayton has signed his nomination and will be supporting the Conservatives for the first time.
Nomination papers for any candidate must be signed by ten signatories and Robin's included a number of prominent local councillors and activists. He was proposed by Cllr Lucy Hodgson, the last Mayor of Worcester and seconded by Cllr Simon Geraghty the Leader of the Council, other signatories included John Bennett a leading Rotarian and retired dairy farmer who had a personal visit from Tony Blair following the 1997 general election and Pam Clayton, who was for many years a hardworking labour councillor in Warndon and a former Deputy Headteacher.
Robin said
"I am delighted at Pam's endorsement. I have always said that I would be happy to work with councillors and activists from all parties to make Worcester a better place. Pam's many years of hard work on behalf of the people of Warndon and her experience and knowledge of local education make her a valuable supporter and source of wise advice. I do not believe that politics ought to be tribal and I look forward to working with Pam and others who have come to see that we need a change from a partisan and remote government. We need to build an alliance to further the interest of Worcester."
"Our current government seems to be good at defining what it is against but not at saying what it is for. The idea of an anti-tory alliance will only confirm the suspicions of those who feared that a vote for the Liberal Democrats in Worcester could turn out to be a vote for four more years of Gordon Brown. Having lost public confidence, the Prime Minister now appears to be cynically looking for backroom deals to deny people their choice on who runs the country."
"People in Worcester have a clear choice, between a candidate, with a broad base of support, focused on Worcester or a partisan Government focused on saving its skin. I call on anyone who wants a stronger voice for Worcester, whether they are Labour, Liberal or Conservative to vote for change on May 6th."
