Robin lends his support to the Parliamentary ‘100 in 100’ apprenticeships campaign

Robin Walker, MP for Worcester and a huge supporter of apprenticeships locally has joined a campaign to spread awareness of the opportunities that apprenticeships offer to both young people and businesses.

Robin, who has called on Worcester’s businesses to create 15,000 new apprenticeships by 2020, is one of 100 MPs who have joined the fight, pledging to champion apprenticeships in their local area. Furthermore Robin is helping to ensure that his constituents are benefiting from the increasing number of quality apprenticeships on offer as the Government heads toward its target of three million apprenticeship starts by 2020.

The campaign, formally launched in Parliament today: the Parliamentary 100 in 100, led by Nadhim Zahawi MP as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Apprentices – will see an announcement by an MP every day for 100 days.

These announcements can include pledges from local businesses, charities or schools to take on apprentices for the first time, or to grow their existing apprenticeship programmes. Robin has been appointed a Parliamentary Apprenticeship Ambassador to work with Mr Zahawi in reaching out to colleagues and ensuring MPs from across the country play their part in driving forward the apprenticeship agenda.

Robin is a member of the all-party group for Apprenticeships and the all-party group for Youth Employment. As a member of the BIS Select Committee in the last Parliament he scrutinised the Government’s apprenticeship policy and as PPS to the Education Secretary he supports her in her drive to ensure apprenticeships deliver valuable education and qualifications as well as to reform careers advice to strengthen the understanding of apprenticeships. He ran his own 100 in 100 campaign and put on an Apprenticeship and Enterprise Fair in conjunction with the Worcester News in the last Parliament and helped local companies to recruit hundreds more apprentices.

Nadhim Zahawi MP said:

“I am delighted that Robin is backing apprenticeships in Worcester. We delivered more than 2.3million apprenticeships starts during the last Parliament, which is a record to be proud of. But for every single one of those apprenticeship starts, there was a person gaining new skills, and hands on experience, giving them a brighter future. This is why it is so important to ensure that Worcester is a key part of the drive toward the three million, ensuring that even more opportunities are created, and I am delighted that Robin will be doing just that.”

Robin said:

“As an Apprentice Champion in Parliament, I absolutely believe that apprenticeships offer a brilliant opportunity for local businesses to help develop the careers of talented young people here in Worcester and ensuring the workforce of the future has the skills it needs. People such as Jamie Oliver, Stella McCartney, and even Alex Ferguson all started their careers as apprentices, not to mention many of the today’s business leaders. I know that many local firms in Worcester are led by people who started out as apprentices and I want to make sure we see more of these in the future.”

“Recent figures show that more than 5,000 new apprenticeships have been started by people in Worcester since 2010. This means more young people earning and learning, getting the skills they need for a successful and secure future.”

“This local growth in apprenticeships has been part of a wider increase, with 315,760 started in the West Midlands since May 2010, and over 2.6 million new apprenticeships across England. I’ve long been a supporter of apprenticeships and I’m delighted to be supporting my colleague Nadhim’s fantastic campaign.”
