Worcester can lead the way in tackling the disability employment gap

Worcester MP, Council & local businesses join forces to get more firms to hire disabled jobseekers at a Disability Confident event taking place next week.

The event is part of the Government’s Disability Confident campaign – working with employers to recruit and retain more disabled people as part of the Government’s drive to halve the disability employment gap.

Local employers from Sanctuary Housing to Waitrose are grouping together to support more disabled people into jobs.

The event, to be hosted by Robin Walker MP and Headway Worcestershire at the Guildhall, Worcester between 10am and 1pm on Wednesday 6th April, will be a reverse jobs fair where employers attend to find out more about hiring disabled people from other employers who already do it and local disability support organisations. They are asked to offer opportunities to disabled job-seekers, such as work experience, apprenticeships, work trials or employment.

It is one in a series of events that are part of the Government’s Disability Confident campaign. Led by Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson, it exists to highlights the benefits to businesses of recruiting disabled people and how employers can achieve this. The campaign addresses misconceptions about disabled people in the work place and highlights the benefits of hiring them. At a time of high employment more businesses than ever are interested in the benefits of supporting disabled people into work and the last year has seen a substantial rise in the number of people with disabilities entering the work force. Once supported into work many people with disabilities have proven highly capable and loyal employees, growing their own earnings potential whilst also proving valuable team members and long serving. More companies could benefit from the skills and talents they can offer the workforce and those who have made adjustments to support people often find their investment repaid many times over. The idea of the Disability Confident campaign is to share best practice and reassure those who are thinking about taking on somebody with a disability for the first time.

 The Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson said:

 “I am really pleased that Robin Walker MP is hosting his own Disability Confident event in Worcester as part of our commitment to halve the disability employment gap.

“Good progress has been made, but I still hear too often that disabled people feel they are being overlooked for jobs they have the skills for. With a local host the event really can make a difference – Robin knows the local businesses best as well as the local people.

“We all have a part to play in making sure disabled people are able to fulfil their potential in the workplace.”

Worcester Jobcentre Plus will be attending to highlight the skills in the area. They will outline the specific recruitment needs in Worcester and how they can be overcome.
