Robin Walker, MP for Worcester, has welcomed the publication today of the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) latest inspection report of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which identified improvements in a number of areas, while recognising that there is still much work to be done in bringing the trust out of special measures.
The inspection, carried out between the 1st and 3rd November 2017, assessed the core services of urgent and emergency care, and medical care (including older people’s care) at the Alexandra and Worcestershire Royal Hospitals. Today’s findings published by the CQC show that all four of the core services inspected have improved from ‘inadequate’ to ‘requires improvement’ in the safe domain, urgent and emergency care at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH) is now rated ‘good’ in the effective domain and three of the four services have improved their overall rating from ‘inadequate’ to ‘requires improvement’. Given that only four of the twenty-two core services were rated in this inspection, there have been no changes to the overall ratings of the hospitals individually or the Trust overall as a result of this inspection.
Among the improvements highlighted at the Worcester site it was noted that the Emergency Department (ED) now has at least one dedicated children’s nurse on duty each shift, effective administration of pain relief had improved from the previous inspection, and patient flow had begun to show signs of improvement. Medicines safety work by the pharmacy team in the ED at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and the responsiveness of the mental health team were also singled out as improvements. As in previous inspections, patients spoke highly of the compassion in care and emotional support provided by medical and nursing staff.
The CQC also identified areas that the Trust needs to continue to improve. This includes further improvement in the levels of mandatory training, improved responsiveness by specialist doctors for patients in the Emergency Departments, timeframes for resolution of complaints and risk management processes.

“I was glad to read the CQC report’s findings that show improvement in a number of areas across the Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust sites. Perhaps most important of all is the fact that safety has improved in all the areas inspected at both Worcestershire Royal and the Alex, and that the effectiveness of urgent and emergency care at the Royal has also been assessed as improving.”
“Of course, there is still a long way to go to improve performance in all areas but today’s report does show that the changes implemented by the new management team are beginning to have a noticeable effect, with staff and patients reporting improvements in leadership and performance monitoring. It has been notable that the quality of care has always been highly rated and I would like to thank staff at the trust for their hard work and dedication.”
“I am as impatient as anyone for better results to be delivered and want to see an overall good or outstanding inspection result as soon as possible. However, I do believe that a corner has been turned and I will continue to work with the trust, government and local residents to push for the highest quality acute hospital services that my constituents rightly expect.”
“I will continue to do all I can to support the trust management team alongside the county’s other MPs, with the main priority ahead being ensuring the efficient and targeted delivery of the record £29million capital funding announced by the Health Secretary last summer.”
