Robin Walker hailed today’s announcement that 2.1 million people will be receiving a pay rise, with those working in retail and hospitality set to benefit the most.
Henceforth, 1.8 million workers earning the National Living Wage will see their pay packets boosted by £690 over the year as the biggest ever increase to the National Living Wage comes into effect.
The National Minimum Wage is also increasing; the rate for 21-24 year olds has been raised to £7.70, providing an additional £580 over the year for those in full time employment, and 18-20 year olds in full time work will see a boost of £455 over the year.
These welcomed increases form a part of the Government’s commitment to protect workers through the modern Industrial Strategy.
Robin is a longstanding supporter of the National Living Wage and endorsed its introduction. Cutting taxes for working families by raising the income tax threshold has always been important to Robin and as a back-bencher Robin spoke often of raising the threshold up to the level of someone working full-time on the minimum wage.
This raise marks twenty years of the National Minimum Wage, which is currently growing faster than other countries with similar or higher minimum wage boundaries such as Belgium, France and Germany. On the 6th of April, the top employment tribunal fine for employers will quadruple.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, said:
“This government is dedicated to increasing the wages of the lowest paid which is why we introduced the National Living Wage and have continued to increase the National Minimum Wage rates – all of which will rise again today and benefit millions of workers.”

While the proportion of low paid jobs is now at its lowest level for 20 years, we are going further by asking Professor Arindrajit Dube, a world-leading expert in the field, to undertake a review of the international evidence of minimum wages on productivity and employment.”
