Boost for Walker’s Campaign as Worcester’s most successful entrepreneur and former Labour Mayor show support

Today Robin Walker’s first set of nomination papers have been filed with the Guildhall in

Worcester and the Conservative Candidate has revealed two of his key supporters for the

election campaign in 2015.

Cecil Duckworth, CBE, who founded Worcester Heat Systems, which later became Worcester

Bosch, is now the city’s biggest private sector employer. Cecil then went on to support

Worcester Rugby Football Club in its rise to premiership status, as well as founding local

environmental charity the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust. He was awarded the Freedom of the

City of Worcester in 2008 and has spoken out for the first time to show his support for Robin,

saying:

“Having built a business in Worcester and invested in local sport, I want an MP who is ambitious

for the city and its people, who stands up for business and supports local charities. Robin

Walker has always backed jobs and apprenticeships for Worcester, helped local charities, as

well as cheered on the Warriors. I wish him luck.”

Mike Layland, twice Mayor of Worcester, has also endorsed Robin’s campaign. Mike was a

Labour Councillor for many years, and was first been elected to the council in 1966. He was

made Mayor by Labour in 1982, however he later became an Independent and remained on the

Council until 2013, under Independent colours. For decades he represented Worcester’s

Nunnery Ward and he became Mayor for the second time in 2012 as an Independent. He has

also served as City Chamberlain and High Sherriff. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of

Worcester in 2014.

He said

“Before he was elected, Robin said he wanted to be Worcester’s man in Westminster and he

has stuck faithfully to that pledge. What a difference he has made for our city – more resources

for schools and great support for apprenticeships. Respected across the political spectrum, he’s

always prepared to listen to people’s problems. He has certainly earned our support.”

Commenting on their support, Robin said

“I have been very lucky to be able to serve a city about which I am passionate and the place in

which I grew up. It is a real honour to have two of its leading lights back my campaign for re-

election. Cecil Duckworth is an inspiration to anyone who wants to get out and start their own

business and has been one of our city’s top philanthropists for decades. Mike Layland is an

inspiration for his extraordinary record of public service and a true independent when it comes

for standing up for the interests of Worcester. I am humbled to have the support of such giants

and I will work all the harder to deserve it.”
