Worcester MP Robin Walker has spoken of his delight at the success of this year’s Apprenticeship Awards as leading businesses from across Worcestershire gathered at West Midlands Safari Park last Thursday.

It turned into a great night for apprentices in the City with Worcester Bosch, Yamazaki Mazak and Southco all picking up honours at the event.

Worcester Bosch were named Large Apprenticeship Employer of the Year while Pippa Dressler-Pearson from Southco picked up two awards including Worcestershire Apprentice of the Year. Alex Tyrer from Sanctuary Housing won Higher Level Apprentice of the Year and Dave Barnett, Learning and Development Manager at Yamazaki Mazak was recognised as Apprentice Ambassador of the Year for his work increasing the number of apprentices at the company.

The event, hosted by Worcestershire Apprenticeships in conjunction with the LEP and the County Council was the third since its launch in 2014 and with the aim to recognise the hard work of Apprentices, Employers, Schools, Training Providers and others that have dedicated time and effort into furthering apprenticeship opportunities across the county.

Commenting on the successes of apprenticeships in Worcester, Robin said:

“It is fantastic to see the importance of the role of apprenticeships being recognised and the achievements of these local leaders being recognised. I was sorry not to be able to there in person but delighted to see Worcester progress so well.”

“We are only partly into the year and Worcestershire Apprenticeships have already spoken to 10,000 young people across the county and supported 500 into Apprenticeships. They have built relationships with over 600 employers and the success of the awards evening last Thursday speaks volumes towards Worcestershire’s commitment to seeing that young people gets the skills to get on in life.”

“I know from my discussions with them that local business leaders value apprenticeships enormously and for many of our young people they are a first step on the career ladder. I am delighted for the organisers and business involved in putting on such an amazing event and I will continue to do all I can to stand up for apprenticeships on Worcester.”
