Worcester’s MP Robin Walker has welcomed news that the county is to benefit from a £300,000 technology grant to help improve road safety and ease congestion.
The funding is part of a £4 million Government technology funding scheme, to which councils pitched their ideas to improve journeys through digital innovation. The Government money will be spent on developing cutting edge technology such as apps and sensors which can be used to cut congestion, improve parking in city centres and alert drivers when electric car charging points become available.
In Worcestershire, the £300,000 grant will be used to develop an information sharing system so that traffic incidents can be dealt with quickly by highway staff and vehicles. This will improve safety and traffic flow by ensuring the swiftest possible response to incidents on Worcestershire’s roads.
Roads Minister Andrew Jones, said:
“I congratulate today’s winners for coming up with cutting-edge, innovative ideas that will transform journeys for passengers and motorists across the country. Technology is rapidly evolving and this important work shows that if we get it right, it can cut congestion, speed up journeys, clean up the environment, and improve accessibility.”
Commenting on the news, Robin said:
“This funding is very welcome news for everyone who uses Worcester’s roads. Worcestershire County Council submitted an excellent bid to use the latest technology to help keep the county moving and keep motorists safe – it is fantastic that we have now received the largest share of grant funding of any local authority.”
“I know that both road safety and traffic congestion are major concerns for many constituents – this funding is further evidence of the Government’s commitment to addressing these concerns, as well as improving the county’s infrastructure and driving our economy forward.”
“In conjunction with the ongoing progress of dualling the Southern Link road and the recent announcement of £1.1 million in pothole repair funding for the county, this is yet more good news for Worcester motorists and public transport users alike.”
