Robin Walker, MP for Worcester, is to join a fundraising effort in support of Sight Concern Worcestershire.

This Saturday, 22nd April, Robin will ‘Walk the Blindfold Mile’ to raise money for and awareness of Sight Concern Worcestershire, a local charity supporting blind and partially sighted people to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Participants will be complete a mile-long route around Worcester city centre while blindfolded, and with the assistance of a sighted guide. The sighted guide walks slightly ahead and to one side of their companion – describing what obstacles may be ahead and any interesting features they come across. The walk will begin and end at Sight Concern’s Bradbury Centre in Sansome Walk.

Walk the Blindfold Mile raises vital funds, awareness and understanding of important issues that can otherwise go unnoticed, for example how much of a hazard street furniture can be – wheelie bins, parked cars or even other pedestrians. The Blindfold Mile helps sighted people understand that it is okay to offer help to a blind person and shows you how to go about guiding.

Other participants in the fundraising event include Lesk Engineers, Handelsbanken, Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce, Thursfields, Kays Theatre Group, Ophthalmology at Worcester Royal Hospital, Gordon Lutton Solicitors, Headturner Search, Driver Hire, Modus and Reverend Jo Musson of Claines and St Georges CofE Church.

Speaking ahead of the event, Robin said:

“I am really looking forward to this opportunity to support Sight Concern locally. Sight loss is an issue that affects many of my constituents, and I was keen to take this opportunity to gain more understanding of the challenges they face every day.”

“At the same time, I look forward to helping Sight Concern reach their £3,000 fundraising target. I would encourage people to donate to this vital local charity by sponsoring me or anyone else they know who is participating via the fundraising website.”
