Worcester MP, Robin Walker has welcomed news that the main works on the final phase of the scheme to dual the Southern Link Road from Junction 7 of the M5 to the Powick roundabout are set to begin this month.

Robin has long campaigned for funding for the Southern Link Road and is pleased that a date for the commencement of the final works has been announced by the Worcestershire County Council. The Council have also provided a flyover video impression of what the project will look like when completed, a link can be found below.

The commencement of work on this project is the culmination of years of campaigning and will enable the final section of road from Powick roundabout across Carrington Bridge to the Ketch to be dualled, thus completing the entire stretch of road to and from Junction 7 of the M5.

On the 1st of March, Roads Minister Jesse Norman announced the approval of funding signaling the green light for the final stage of construction to begin alongside the existing Carrington Bridge, which will provide much needed congestion relief for residents and businesses, while boosting jobs and economic growth in Worcester.

The dual carriageway which will assist in both connecting the M5 to the west of Worcestershire, and Herefordshire and provide a bypass to Worcester City Centre to ease congestion cutting average journey times along the A4440 in both directions during peak hours in the opening year.

Robin commenting on the above said:

“This is the largest investment ever made to roads in Worcester, which will enable improved journey times and the reliability of the network, and I am pleased to see a commencement date for the works has been announced by the Worcestershire County Council.”

“Dualling the Southern Link Road has been a key priority of mine since my election as Worcester’s MP and I have raised this with Ministerial colleagues in the Department for Transport many times. As a regular user of this road, I am pleased to see that works will soon commence. I know for the constituents of Worcester; this announcement can’t come soon enough.”

Councillor Ken Pollock, Cabinet Member for Economy and Infrastructure said:

“It’s fantastic news that work can now begin on this final phase to dual the Southern Link Road from the M5 to Powick Roundabout. Once complete, journey times will be significantly reduced which will help keep unnecessary through traffic out of the city centre.”

The dualling will also support economic growth by improving access to and from the M5 and also to the Worcestershire Parkway station which is due to open later this year.”

Major Project Director for Alun Griffiths Limited, Richard Bruten, said:

“As Worcestershire County Council’s contractor, we are very excited to be working on this, the final phase of the critically important Southern Link Road scheme.”

“We’d like to assure those that use this stretch of the Southern Link Road that we will be doing what we can to ensure the impact on current journey times is kept to a minimum.”
