Walker welcomes funding announcement to dual Southern Link

Worcester MP, Robin Walker welcomes today’s announcement of almost £55 million of government funding approved for the Southern Link Road under the Large Locals Major Fund.

Today saw the funding approved by Roads Minister Jesse Norman, signaling the green light for the final stages of construction to begin alongside the existing Carrington Bridge, will provide much needed congestion relief for residents and businesses, while boosting jobs and economic growth in Worcester.

Today’s announcement will see the culmination of years of campaigning and will enable the final section of road from Powick roundabout across Carrington Bridge to the Ketch to be dualled, completing the entire stretch of road to and from Junction 7 of the M5.

The dual carriageway which will assist in both connecting the M5 to the west of Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and provide a bypass to Worcester City Centre to ease congestion cutting average journey times along the A4440 in both directions during peak hours in the opening year.

Robin was pleased to see the funding for this major project approved as the southern link road is one of the most congested routes in Worcestershire, with more than 30,000 vehicles using it per day.

This project will improve access to all parts of the Worcester and from the west of the City to Worcestershire Parkway Station, allowing for better journeys for commuters and will assist to stimulate the local economy through the creation of more than 6,000 jobs.

Robin said:

“The approval of this funding will enable us complete the largest investment ever made to roads in Worcester, which will enable improved journey times and the reliability of the network.”

“This project has been in the pipelines for over 30 years, and today’s announcement frees up this funding for the works on the final leg to commence, with the aim of completion by 2021. This has been a key priority of mine since my election as Worcester’s MP and I have raised it on numerous with various Ministerial colleagues in the Department for Transport. 

“This venture would not have been able to go ahead without the hard work, dedicated support, and campaigning efforts of all Worcestershire MPs, two Herefordshire MPs, and the Worcestershire County Council who committed £7.5 million to the project. Securing this funding is a fantastic accomplishment, and a testament to the efficiency and value of collaborative work.”

“As a regular user of the road, I am delighted to see the final announcement of funding being made and the money to commence this project being handed over. I know for the constituents of Worcester; this announcement can’t come soon enough.”

Roads Minister Jesse Norman said:
